The Roman Catholic Church in The Bahamas is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope. The diocese was elevated to a full diocese, as the diocese of Nassau in June 1960. On June 22nd, 1999, the diocese was again elevated as the new Archdiocese of Nassau.

ARCHBISHOP PATRICK C. PINDER of The ArchDiocese of Nassau

Biography

BORN: November 1st 1953 in Nassau, Bahamas.

Baptized: on December 13th of the same year, at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Nassau.

Ordained Priest: August 15, 1980

Appointed Auxiliary Bishop: June 27, 2003

Ordained Bishop: August 15, 2003

Appointed Archbishop-Elect: February 17, 2004

Installed Archbishop of Nassau: May 4, 2004

Attended: the primary school then attached to the cathedral and during this time received the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Graduated: St. Augustine's College, in 1971. The same year he entered the seminary at St. Meinrad in Indiana, U.S.A. Completed: the undergraduate programs at St. Meinrad and obtained the BA degree in Philosophy in 1975. In the fall of 1975 he entered the theology program at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium.Received: S.T.B./M.A. in 1978 and was ordained Deacon, by Bishop Paul Leonard Haggarty OSB, on July 20th, 1978. After a summer of pastoral work at the cathedral, the new deacon returned to Louvain to begin the S.T.L. program. This he completed in June of 1980. He then returned to Nassau and was ordained Priest on August 15th, 1980. The ordaining prelate was the, then, Archbishop of Kingston, Jamaica, Samuel E. Carter S.J.

First assignment: Associate pastor at Our Lady's Parish. He remained there for one year.

August of 1981 became a full time religion teacher at Aquinas College. In addition to this, he was responsible for weekend Masses at the newly established Resurrection Parish. He remained in this assignment from mid-1981 to mid-1984.

In the Fall of 1984, began doctoral studies at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. He completed these studies and was awarded the S.T.D. degree in May of 1988. His area of specialization at the doctorate level is sacramental theology.

September 1st, 1988, appointed as the Rector of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. This assignment ended on April 1st, 1997. Since that time, Fr. Pinder has been appointed Moderator or The Curia and Vicar for Pastoral Affairs. He was invested as a Chaplain of His Holiness on December 15th, 1999.

On September 2, 2002, he was appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese.
