Historic Bahamian Catholic Cathedral Damaged in fire

Septemeber 25th, 2009 would be a day that Father Elvado Turnquest would probably always remember. This is the day that the old historic St Francis Cathedral Building caught on fire due to an electrical shortage.
A fire in the rafters of the original St Francis Xavier Cathedral early Friday caused extensive damage to the interior of the 124-year-old historic building.
An electrical short-circuit sparked the blaze shortly after 4.30am. Security staff who heard the popping sound of sparks alerted Father Elvado Turnquest in the rectory as the flames started to take hold.
Flames were isolated on two rafters in front of the altar and Fr Turnquest saw a clear path to the Tabernacle where the Eucharist is kept. Armed with his handheld fire extinguisher, the priest opened the west-facing door in front of the altar to make his way across the building.
But the rush of oxygen that entered with him fuelled the flames and a wall of heavy smoke fell between the priest and the holy sacrament he was determined to rescue.
Fr Turnquest was not able to reach the tabernacle, however when all was done the Eucharist within was found un-touched. It has been confirmed that the historic building will be restored.
