The Roman Catholic Church in The Bahamas is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope. The diocese was elevated to a full diocese, as the diocese of Nassau in June 1960. On June 22nd, 1999, the diocese was again elevated as the new Archdiocese of Nassau.

Archbishop Lawrence Burke dies in his Hometown

Archbishop Lawrence Burke; the first Archbishop of The Bahamas, died in the retirement home for Catholic priests in his hometown of Kingston Jamaica.

He was instrumental in the expansion and new development of Churches and buildings within the diocese; including the new St Francis Xavier Cathedral on West St.

He returned to Jamaica in 2004 having been succeeded by Archbishop Patrick Pinder of the Bahamas. After serving as Archbishop of the diocese of Kingston for four years he retired in 2008.

Born in Kingston on October 27, 1932 he was ordained a priest on June 16, 1964 at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kingston. He died January 24, 2010 at the age of 77 after a long battle with cancer.
