St Thomas More Parish Celebrates the Easter Triduum beginning with Holy Thursday

This evening at Mass we celebrated Holy Thursday "The Evening Mass Of The Lord's Supper". Here we commemorated the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the sacrament of Holy Orders. It was at this Mass that Jesus changed bread and wine into his Body and Blood. Jesus then directed his disciples to carry out this same ritual by telling them "Do this in remembrance of me".

The highlight of the night came when our Priest and Deacon respectfully; Monsignor Culmer and Deacon Mackey began the washing of the feet of some of the members of the assembly. The "washing of the feet" represents the service and charity of Christ, who came "not to be served, but to serve". He anticipated the supreme sacrifice of Calvary, and left us with the new commandment, "mandatum novum," - love one another as I have loved you.

The evening ended with the Blessed Sacrament being carried in procession through the Church by Deacon Mackey and placed in an altar of repose where it is kept overnight. It will be distributed during the commemoration of the Lord's Passion on Good Friday.

To answer Christ's invitation "Could you not, then, watch one hour with me?" (Matt 26:40), members were invited to sit in silence where the Blessed Sacrament was placed to adore and pray to our Lord Jesus Christ.

What a wonderful evening it was as Monsignor Culmer ended with a grateful heart for the number of persons who were present for the first day of The Triduum.
