Feast of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ

This weekend at Church caught many persons by surprise. When the readings began you can hear the turning of pages as members tried to find the correct page where the readings were being read from. I admit "I was guilty as well".

Celebrated on Sunday was "The Feast of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ". The day on which it is celebrated, however, varies. The 40th day after Easter Sunday is always a Thursday, and the feast has traditionally been celebrated on that Thursday. However, because attendance at Ascension Thursday Masses had been falling for years, the bishops of the United States, in accordance with canon law, petitioned the Vatican to allow the celebration to be transferred to the following Sunday.

The Vatican approved this request, therefore many Diocese in the United States as well as the Diocese of Nassau celebrate this Holy Day of Obligation on Sunday (the 43rd day after Easter). Thursday, the 40th day after Easter still remains a Holy Day of Obligation.
