New Hurricane tracking towards The Bahamas

As of Monday 22 August, 2011, a tropical storm warning has been issued for the southern islands of Inagua, Mayaguana, Acklins and Crooked Islands and the Turks and Caicos islands. The islands of Exuma, Long Island, Rum Cay and Cat Island are being placed under a hurricane watch.

During the early hours of this morning (Monday, 22 Aug) residents of Puerto Rico awoke to power outages and debris about the streets on the island. By 2am Wednesday, 24 Aug of this week the storm is expected to be between Inagua and Crooked Island with winds up to 85mph.

The current track steers it directly through the Bahamas impacting the majority of our islands. The country's capital, Nassau is expected to be impacted by Thursday of this week. Preparations to secure your property should now be paramount as this storm is expected to strengthen if it does not move over the island of Hispaniola and Haiti. Fortunately for The Bahamas, the last storm (T.S. Emily) tracked over the mountainous terrain of Hispaniola and Haiti where it was downgraded to a depression.

For more information on how to prepare yourself for this storm the Archbishop has issued a hurricane preparedness message at the start of the hurricane season. Please take not of his advice as we are expecting an active season this year.
