Abortion legal in The Bahamas?

Before you take the pitchforks out to attack me, let us look at this for a moment. The Catholic Church has always and will forever be against abortion, period. Life is formed in the mothers' womb from conception and not at a certain stage or period in the development of the fetus.

Secular society tries to justify when it is OK to have an abortion, even to the point of declaring that it should be a mother's choice whether to continue with the pregnancy or not. This group is known as the pro-choice movement. God help us if this movement pokes its head in our little society. I'm guessing the unborn is only a tadpole that miraculously transforms into a human over time.

What does God say about each and every one of us; "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" Jeremiah 1:5. When exactly did God form us in the womb, was it a period within the first trimester, or the second trimester? The murder of two pregnant women for the year has sparked concern for the laws in our country to be amended in order that a murderer of a pregnant woman be charged with a double murder. Currently, the penal code states otherwise and have not been of concern to anyone until recently.

A former Cabinet Minister is calling for a "formal" consensus on when life begins. Have we as a Christian nation lost our way? Speaking with a friend priest yesterday, I expressed my concerns over this matter only to get the exact conclusion that has bothered me over this unfortunate situation our country finds ourselves in that abortion is obviously legal in The Bahamas. The message this law is sending out is that life does not begin until outside the womb. This is a slap in the face to Christians who respect the dignity of life. Under the present law of the country, a person cannot be charged with the murder of the unborn child, as the unborn child is not yet considered a life. This law contradicts the law that abortion is illegal in the country.

Abortion does not just mean going to the Doctor and having your baby surgically removed and tossed away as trash. There are many ways in which a mother or father can get rid of their unborn baby without even stepping foot into a Doctor's office. So it appears that this law can open the door for unscrupulous actions by parents who decide they do not want the future commitment of raising a child. There are many ways to get rid of a baby without harming the mother. Many Bahamians are not aware of the current law and have only recently been made aware since the double murder of two of our pregnant mothers.

This matter has to be addressed and dealt with by our government officials, many of whom proclaim to be Christians. The fact of the matter is that when a man and woman (married or unmarried) decide to have sex, they consented to the possibility of conceiving. A woman knows immediately that she is pregnant as there are immediate signs of procreation. This is Gods mandate to us, to be fruitful and multiply. From the moment the man's seed penetrates the woman's egg, life has begun. God never said, you will be with child at the 2nd trimester. When you plug in a lamp and turn on the switch, do you give it a few minutes before you know that there is light, even though the light came on the moment the switch brought power to the bulb? Absolutely not!

We have all been born with an imprint of God on our hearts and should know that life begins from the moment of fertilization. Period!
