Don't Worry, Be Happy

"Here's a little some I wrote, you might want to sing it note for note, don't worry, be happy. In every life you have some trouble, when you worry you make it double, don't worry, be happy." Bobby McFerrin knew exactly what he was talking about when he wrote and sang this song back in 1988, but we don't need a song to tell us this, it's all told in God's Word.

The readings this Sunday have certainly resonated with me and my wife. It seemed that we have been anxious lately about just about everything, but two of the major family issues have caused fear and anxiety to take hold of our lives, I will be the first to admit that we should know better. The first reading taken from Isaiah  49:14-15 tells us that God is always with us, he will never forsake us, therefore we have nothing to worry about.

We will always find something in life to worry about, our circumstances change everyday that can cause us to worry. One minute we're worrying over the spouses job, especially if he/she is the only one currently employed, then again we worry about our kids. As a parent we only want the best for our children so we worry if they will succeed in school so that they can further their horizon in higher learning education; we worry whether they will get into college. Will money be there to help that process? These and many more are the things we worry about.

St Paul explains to us in 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 that we should not judge others, but also we should not judge ourselves. It is so easy to past judgement on ourselves when we worry about things we can not change or have no control over. Satan will make us feel worst than the worst by causing us to believe that we are to blame for whatever we fear and are worrying about, but we are reminded that God alone sees and knows our heart, which will eventually be revealed.

During times of fear and anxiety we are comforted in knowing that God is there always, we know that he loves us unconditionally, but we find ourselves still concerned over matters of insignificance. This journey of fear and anxiety is real, and we will forever have some form of it throughout our lives. We however must never give up and throw in the towel for the results can surely be detrimental to our salvation. The Gospel reading clearly explains why it is fruitless to worry about things which God already knows that we need. What we should be doing is seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself.

As I former worrier, "not warrior," I can relate to this line that Bobby McFerrin sang in his song:
'Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down'
