Those who are healthy do not need a physician.

The emergency room at Princess Margaret Hospital is always crowded with people who stop by for emergency and non emergency checkups. Having worked along with a few of the nurses at the ER, I was told how so many people come in regularly even when they are not sick. Apparently they are just there to hang out and past time, and eventually will get to see a physician. Thankfully the ER is set up with a triage to screen those who are critically ill from those who are just faking it.

In today's Gospel Jesus does something that once again displeases the Pharisees and the scribes; He welcomes a tax collector named Levi to follow Him. Levi leaves everything and does just that, then Levi throws a banquet for Jesus and has other tax collectors at the table as well. They were turned off by Jesus' actions because they couldn't understand how Jesus who many thought to be a prophet would sit and eat with such people. He was breaking every rule in their books.

Each of the disciples were not high profile men, they did not come from wealthy backgrounds; they were simple men, probably not always the nicest men, but Jesus selected each of them to do continue His work. The Pharisees probably did not find Jesus' selection very credible because He didn't ask men who were engaged in preaching and the law, but Jesus sees what others can not see. As He sat at the table with the tax collectors the conversation certainly was not about how much money they were collecting.

As Jesus was challenged as to why He would dine with such people as the tax collectors He admonished that those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. Jesus then further went on to say that He came to call sinners to repentance, not the righteous. As the triage department sifts through the "patients" in the emergency room, they look for the most critically ill ones to tend to first, these are the ones who are need of immediate help. Jesus too is inviting us to repentance, just as he did with Levi. Levi was sick and needed a Physician badly. By searching deep within our hearts we too can take Jesus up on that offer to follow Him by getting to confession and seeking God's healing power and mercy. Jesus is the Physician of the Year, and for all eternity.
